Prescribers
Worth knowing
Little change in how you prescribe; the script just goes to a different pharmacy.
-
Payers
Worth knowing
A visible cash price makes it harder to justify high list prices in negotiations.
What launched
NovoCare Pharmacy opened to sell Wegovy directly to patients paying cash. Every dose cost $499 for a month’s supply, delivered to the home.
How it compares
Wegovy’s list price was about $1,349 a month. The new cash price was roughly a third of that, and it came in the familiar pen, not a vial.
Why now
The semaglutide shortage had ended, and compounded copies were being phased out. A lower cash price gave people a branded option at the moment the copies were disappearing.
Who it affects
Mostly people whose insurance does not cover obesity drugs, and the pharmacies and clinics that served them.
